*Barton 19-Rank Theater Pipe Organ History at the WLS Radio Studios in Chicago -

The custom-built Organ is the Barton 3-manual, 19-rank theater pipe organ. It was famously built for the WLS Radio studios in Chicago.

History and Specifications

The Manufacturer: Built by the Bartola Musical Instrument Company of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, under the direction of Dan Barton.

Installation: The organ was installed in 1927 at the WLS studios located on Washington Boulevard in Chicago.

The Setup: While the 3-manual console (keyboard) sat directly in the studio, the 19 ranks of pipes, drums, chimes, and sound effects were housed in a separate, soundproof chamber room. A 5-horsepower motor powered the air blower. Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society

Prominent Uses on WLS Radio:

The instrument was a core feature of the station’s programming from the late 1920s through the 1950s:

Staff Organists: Played extensively by legendary WLS staff organists, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and later Howard Peterson.

The Noon Show: Accompanied live daily variety and interview programs broadcasted by Prairie Farmer magazine.

Sunday Comic Readings: Provided live background music and sound effects while hosts read the Sunday morning newspaper funnies to kids listening across the Midwest.

Fate of the Organ: When the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) fully integrated WLS and moved its studios away from the Prairie Farmer building, the studio organ was decommissioned and sold to a private owner – Now Selling again on Selling on September 12, 2026!
